The Craft: Machine Sewing

The Class: Want to get familiar with a sewing machine to make or alter clothes or home furnishings? The Sewing Machine Driving License is the course to join, run by craft group reMADE DXB at their Al Quoz premises. The three-hour workshop will teach you the basics of a sewing machine, starting with getting to grips with the various dials and knobs, before moving onto practical skills such as basic straight stitch, sharp turn, and sewing around curves, and concluding with a small project to try out your new skills before you head home.

The Dates: Saturday 2nd and Saturday 16th November between 9.30am and 12.30pm.

The Price: Dhs175, inclusive of tuition, use of sewing machine, and light refreshments.

The Craft: Scrapbooking

The Class: If you’ve been meaning to document your photos, letters, and paper mementos for a while but never got round to it, Creative Hands Dubai will teach you the basics of the growing craft phenomenon that is scrapbooking. The private 3-4 hour lesson at the Dubai Investment Park store will teach you about the tools and techniques that scrappers use to preserve memories and document important events in layouts and albums that you can share with family and friends. Classes are arranged when requested and can be followed by intermediate workshops to progress your new hobby.

The Craft: Jewellery Making

The Class: Love jewellery, but always struggle to find the perfect piece in stores? Dubai International Art Centre, based in a converted villa in Jumeirah, runs a 10-part Jewellery Making in Silver course, teaching a range of basic goldsmith techniques including sawing, firing, hammering, bending, and soldering. You will tackle projects during the course that will include designing and making a ring, pendant, bracelet, and pair of earrings, which you can wear after the course knowing they are truly unique.
The Dates: The next 10-week course will start in the third week of January, but you’re welcome to join the current running course if preferred. Classes take place Sunday 9.30am-12.30pm and 6.30pm-9.30pm.
The Price: Dhs1330 for 10 weeks, plus Dhs350 membership fee. Dhs220 per individual session.

The Craft: Knitting

The Class: If you’ve always wanted to grab a pair of knitting needles and knock up a baby blanket or piece of on-trend knitwear, you are in luck – as Jumeirah-based store My Craftland is running four-part courses in Beginners Knitting throughout November and December. The lessons will cover the stitches used in knitting to teach you a skill that is extremely versatile once you’ve mastered the basics – and we’re told the hobby is great for stress-relief too, so perfect for busy mums looking to let off a little steam in the evenings.

The Dates: 4 x Wednesday afternoons 3pm-4.30pm, starting 6th November – or 4 x Sunday evenings 7pm-8.30pm, starting 10th December.
