Silicon Oasis Dubai for families
The McNeil family share their views on family life in Silicon Oasis
How long have you been in Dubai?
Just over two and a half years.
What’s the best thing about bringing up your children in Dubai?
We love that the kids get to play outside most of the year. We also really like that they are getting exposed to lots of cultures and experiences. The kids often count together in Arabic, which is something family and friends from home find fascinating.
How long have you lived in Silicon Oasis?
We’ve been living here for just under a year and we lived in the Mirdif area before that. It’s a really nice area and we find it very family-friendly.
Why did you choose this neighbourhood?
We love the community feel there is here. The kids in the complex are always playing in the park or riding bikes and scooters on the street. Everyone is very friendly.
Did you have your kids in Dubai? How was the experience?
We had our youngest in Dubai at City Hospital. It was great. The staff were fantastic and very supportive. The hospital room was very much like a hotel room!
Where do your children go to school and why did you send them there?
Our oldest goes to Uptown School in Mirdif. We wanted her to go to an IB school and the school gave us a good feeling. We also knew colleagues who had children at the same school. Our youngest daughter is at Blossom Nursery in Academic City.
Have you found it easy to meet other mums here?
Yes, the Mirdif Mums group was great when we first got here. I’m great friends with lots of mums from that group and still go to meet ups with them. I already had a friend in Silicon Oasis when we first moved here so I got to meet another great community of families here too.
What family friendly facilities are nearby?
We have a few green spaces, tennis courts, play grounds and the pool in Cedre Villas. We have a Kids Jungle in the Spinney’s shopping centre for hot days.
Are you planning to stay put in Silicon Oasis?
Yes, definitely. We have a lovely backyard and great neighbours! It is close to my husband’s work, so it’s ticking all the right boxes right now.
What do you do in your free time away from the kids?
I teach yoga in Mirdif and Silicon Oasis, usually when the kids are in school. Or I run my errands and do my shopping at Mirdif City Centre. We balance our social time between our friends in Silicon Oasis and Mirdif.
We love the beach or going to the pool. Coming from Canada and the UK, we were not brought up with easy access to outdoor swimming all year round, so our kids are maximizing this opportunity.
We like going to family movies at the cinema now that Lena is old enough to enjoy it. We generally bring visitors to the brunch at Al Badia Golf Club, Festival City because of the beautiful setting and they look after the kids so well.
Yoga is both a job and a hobby for me, so I’m very lucky in that respect. My husband tries to squeeze a few rounds of golf in when the time allows, and as a family we like swimming and spending time with friends.
