Reddy Roast review

There’s nothing like a wholesome dinner from this comforting spot

You’d think we’re sick of plates heaped with meat, roast potatoes, root vegetables and a Yorkshire pudding (or two) after the festive season, but the idea of a wholesome, home-cooked roast dinner still has our mouths watering come January. This is how we find ourselves at new spot Reddy Roast for a Sunday dinner (on a Friday, naturally).

Walking in, it’s almost like entering a Texan steakhouse, with the long leather benches and wood-panelled walls giving it a real backyard feel.

Our little girl decides to try the kids’ roast chicken dinner; a lovely portion of crackling chicken, chunky chips, crunchy carrots and a perfectly baked Yorkshire pud. Meanwhile, the roast lamb and roast beef plates – chosen by us – are lip-smacking and come in portions that’ll have you loosening your belt.

As a bonus, Reddy Roast shares a kitchen with Jack’s Plaice. This means our small boy, who is having a decidedly off evening, is quickly placated with fish fingers, made from the freshest cod, and a side order of creamy mashed potatoes.

After all that, we still find room for dessert – two scoops of Funky Monkey ice cream (vanilla ice cream, crushed Oreos and bananas – what’s not to love?) for the kids, and a large bowl of apple crumble and custard for us.

With great deals (kids get a free ice cream on Thursdays!) and fantastic grub, Reddy Roast is a real comforting treat.
Open daily 11.30am-10.30pm. Unlicensed. Canal Residence, Sports City (04 513 9449)

The bottom line
This place is all gravy.
