You would think that getting your child’s hair cut should be a relatively easy task. After all, it’s not like your little charmer is going to be demanding complicated up-dos or lengthy keratin treatments. But, as some salons refuse to help you out with even a simple fringe trim, and still others only creating the “Dora bob”, it can be frustrating to get their locks turned into something half-way stylish. Add to that the fierce (and very real fear) that a lot of small people have of the wash, rinse and repeat, and we thought it was high time to do a hair audit and find the best kid-friendly salons across the city.

Belle Enfance
For little princes and princesses, this salon, located in Level Kids, turns hairstyling into an event filled with luxury and laughter. Little girls can primp and preen in their own dedicated salon, where mirrors and make-up stations abound. Cool dudes have their very own vintage barber shop packed with superheroes and traditional comic books. Add to all this a splash of face paint and a box full of dressing-up clothes, and soon they’ll want every day to be a haircut day.
Dhs75-125 (haircut), Dhs35 (fringe trim). Open daily 10am-10pm. Level Kids, second floor, City Walk (800 23553).

Caboodle

If your kids fancy a pamper and play experience (after all, who doesn’t?), then visit Caboodle, with its creative softplay area and craft stations. The place promises fun, making it that bit easier to coax (or bribe) them into getting their locks teased. Once they’ve set eyes on the specially designed children’s salon, which boasts bright colours and cheery staff, you will have a tough time even dragging them away. The salon has a full range of hair, nail and face-painting treatments for kids. And it even has a café on-site serving healthy treats for all.
Dhs65 to Dhs95 (standard cut), Dhs35 (fringe trim). Open Sun-Wed 10am-11pm, Thu-Sat 10am-12am. Level 2, The Dubai Mall (04 325 3367). Other location: City Walk, Jumeirah 1 (04 344 4570).

Cheeky Monkeys

We’d forgive you if you thought an afternoon at Cheeky Monkeys is all about the swirly slides and the trampolines. But it’s more than that. Sure, the added bonus of a workout makes things that bit easier for busy mums and dads. Then there’s Cutting Cove Salon, located inside Cheeky Monkeys, which makes sure every kid feels like a star, as the expert hairdressers groom and pamper them to perfection. From the automobile-shaped chairs to the kid-friendly scented shampoos and conditioners, there are plenty of reasons why children actually look forward to a stress-free hair salon experience here. Oh, and there are even some special services for mums, too.
Dhs50 (standard cut). Tue-Sun 10am-7pm, Mon 9am-6pm. Barsha 2, Barsha Mall, Ground Floor (04 385 0875). Other location: Umm Suqeim, J3 Mall (04 388 1135).

Chloe’s Beauty, Hair and Nails

A ladies-only salon, Chloe’s Beauty, Hair and Nails offers up some super-special children’s treatments, plus it has the added bonus of being a lovely location for a “mummy and daughter” date. The children’s area caters for little girls up to 13 years old, where they can enjoy haircuts, hairstyling, braiding and more. Little dudes, up to age nine, are also welcome, and they can get some cool and trendy styles.
Dhs80 (cut and blow-dry), Dhs50 (standard cut). Open Sun-Thu 7am-9pm, Fri-Sat 9am-9pm. Jumeirah Beach Road, next to Burger Fuel (04 388 4884).

Kido Caractere
With two locations in Dubai, this hair salon is working hard to instill good haircare habits in little ones. The interesting seats (they have steering wheels), bright coloured fixtures and medley of small toys goes a long way in making little customers feel relaxed. It’s a great choice for a first haircut, with stylists working on everything from regular trims to fashionable spikes and trendy up-styles.
Dhs60-80 (standard haircut), Dhs30 (fringe trim). Open daily 10am-10pm. The Dubai Mall, Downtown Dubai (04 551 7664). Other location: Arabian Ranches 2 (04 422 8415).

Kidz Palooza
Trendy hairstyles, beauty makeovers and a whole lot of fun are part of the experience for children when they take their seats at a Kidz Palooza basin. The well-known kids’ play centre’s dedicated salon is stocked with top toys and entertaining movies to put little ones at ease. Plus, with hairstylists who have more than 15 years’ experience in trimming little locks, kids are put at ease straight away. If all else fails, at least you can let them have a run around the play area.
From Dhs60 (standard cut), Dhs30 (fringe trim). Open Sat-Wed 9am-10pm, Thu-Fri 9am-midnight. Times Square Centre, Sheikh Zayed Road (04 330 7101).

Orlando Kids Salon

Creating unique hairstyles and glitzy cuts for children up to 17 years old, Orlando Kids Salon has a very loyal following among families in the city. The atmosphere of the salon is one of fun, with plenty to keep little ones occupied, such as toys, rides on cars and iPads loaded with games at every corner. Orlando himself is always there to offer advice (see below) as he snips and trims those cute baby curls. Once sporting a trendy barnet, the teeny tots will even be presented with a first haircut certificate to treasure.
Dhs50 to Dhs120 (standard cut), Dhs30 (fringe trim). Open daily 9am-9pm. Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT), JBC 1, Cluster G, Lake Level (055 607 2563).
