In a city seemingly overflowing with increasingly outrageous “freakshakes” (piled high with everything from candyfloss to mini burgers) this knickerbocker glory from The Victorian represents a childhood treat at its best.

If you’re heading to City Walk en famille, then you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to cooling down over a bite to eat. But when the “I’m hungry” chants kick in, it’s easy to settle for obvious options.

Step in The Victorian. For something totally different it’s worth checking out this unusual eatery. The café itself is decked out, as expected, in a very regal way (somewhat like a history lesson with snacks) with Victorian-style upholstered furnishings and old-fashioned paintings.

And when it comes to the cuisine, there’s a taste of a bygone era, too. A new menu, specially created by The Victorian’s head chef Karl Kollmitzer, represents the best of classic British food, with dishes such as Earl Grey waffles and a full “Victorian” breakfast on offer.

Meanwhile, mini fish and chips and beef bangers and mash take pride of place on the kids’ menu.

It’s this knickerbocker glory that catches our eye the most, though. Packed into a tall, elegant glass, juicy fruit is layered between sweet custard and whipped cream.

There’s a generous helping of chocolate brownie ice cream and red velvet cake, too, not forgetting the mountains of marshmallows decorating the top.

Grown up enough for adults, fun enough for kids. That’s everyone covered, then.
Dhs58. Open daily 9am-midnight. City Walk, Al Safa Street (04 338 1234).
