Musical talent in Dubai
We meet seven young melody-makers in Dubai
Nine-year-old Thea Walid Zok lives in Mirdif and started learning the violin when she was six.
Why did you choose this particular instrument?
Ever since I was little, even before I could understand what music was all about, the violin fascinated me. When I started to talk, mum started asking me what instrument I would like to play and my answer was always the violin. Mum kept me waiting for a while to start taking me to lessons to make sure that my passion was real.
Where do you have lessons?
The Brooklyn Melodies Music School in Mirdif.
What’s good about the violin?
When I hold the violin I imagine myself playing on stage. It’s so part of my life now, I can’t imagine myself without it. I am only sad that I can’t play as much as I would like because I have school and friends that keep me busy. I’d love to perfect playing the violin, not because I want to play in concerts but because my mum says ‘always finish what you start and be the best you can’.
What’s bad about it?
Well I don’t really think there is anything bad about learning the violin, I just wish more young kids could appreciate it since it is so different to the kind of music they normally listen to.
Is it an expensive hobby?
That you need to ask my Dad, since in money matters I am told we appreciate what we have but I really don’t know the details. All I know is I take care of my instrument and I never skip a class.
What kind of music do you like to play the most?
I like classical and rock’n’roll too, and I can’t wait to start mixing songs with my violin.
