Parenting in the city
Time Out Kids spoke to six parents and asked them to share their views on being a parent in Dubai: the highs, the lows and lots more!
Originally from Kerala, Christina Thomas has lived in the UAE her whole life, and now resides in Jumeirah with her husband Abby and their kids Illana, seven and Aleigha, two
What do you find the hardest thing about living in the UAE?
The hardest bit about living here at the moment is the rising living costs. Having lived here for the past 33 years I’ve seen this place go from being totally affordable to ridiculous!
What do you struggle with most in relation to parenting in the UAE?
The competition with other parents and what they provide for their children. My seven year old actually worries about which car I will drop her to school in today - something that would have never occurred to me when I was growing up.
What are your main fears as an expat bringing up your kids as expats?
That they would lose the connection with their home country. Although we take them every year on a holiday back home they usually do stick out like a sore thumb back in their home environment and it makes me wonder how they would ever cope should we ever have to move back.
What is your motivation for living in the UAE? How long do you plan to stay here?
This place offers us a sense of safety and security with no political unrest, many employment opportunities coupled with a tax free salary – none of which my home country offers. The general quality of life is much higher here with us being able to spend lots of time together as a family in an environment that is quite comfortable!
What has surprised you most about being a parent in general?
That I would never be able to go to toilet undisturbed! No kidding – my children have some sort of an alarm that rings the minute I step into the toilet and that’s when they feel the sudden need to ask me some of the silliest questions!
