We caught up with The Kaiser Chiefs’ keyboard player at Chi last week
Shall we call you Nick or Peanut? Peanut is fine – that’s how everybody in the music industry knows me.
And why is that? We were drawing pictures of ourselves at school when I was 10, and unfortunately my drawings weren’t really up to scratch. Mine kind of resembled a peanut… and that was it. Little did I think 20 years later I’d be speaking to someone in Dubai about it!
What have you heard about the city? I’ve been looking at a few websites – actually the Time Out Dubai site. It seems like a busy sort of business place, but the nightlife sounds quite happening too.
What’s the weirdest thing a fan has ever done? It’s quite intimate when you get off the stage with crazy Japanese fans. But sometimes things get a little bit too close, you know? You’re a band, and sometimes people travel every year and come to see you and everything, but at some point, the line gets crossed. You feel guilty. We’re decent guys, we’re a decent band and we do the right thing, but sometimes it’s kind of like, ‘You can’t come on tour with us!’ People get so enthusiastic, so excited and so nervous, and then all of a sudden they’re just hanging round and hanging round, and it’s like, if I don’t walk away, you’re not going to walk away, are you? You get a few of those awkward moments where you’re like ‘Right, I’m going to go now…’ But that’s a small price to pay for fame.
What has been your best gig ever? Glastonbury in the UK in 2005. I think [Andrew] White’s guitar didn’t work for two songs, that was how good it was: it was still the best gig ever and White’s guitar broke. It was our first big festival and it felt like we’d really made it.
If you were a forest animal, what would you be? A forest animal? It would have to be something that could go high up, that could climb up a tree. Maybe a bird, really. But birds can climb trees, can’t they? Some kind of predatory bird, I think. Maybe I like to be all-seeing, to be in control.
Is that how you are in the band? I think I like to be in control of things a little bit, but in the band I think I’m a bit more of a burrowing animal, you know? I like to find a safe place.
Kiss, kill, marry: Katie Perry, Pixie Lott, Lily Allen. Kill Katie Perry – I just don’t get it! Kiss Lily Allen, marry Pixie Lott.
What’s your favourite condiment? HP Brown Sauce. It’s just good with anything. Maybe you’ve got some cold pizza left… If you’ve got cheap tomato sauce, you’re better off having none of it, really! But brown sauce – it pretty much goes with anything.
