Bob Geldof in Dubai
We talk to grumpy Irish singer ahead of Irish Village gig Discuss this article
You've played The Irish Village here before, why are you coming back? What did you make of Dubai?
I have been in Dubai hundreds of times. First in 1978. The Village is fun, casual, good stage and great sound. I love doing it.
What does St Patrick's Day mean to you?
Freezing rainy days watching the worst parade in history in Dublin. Eg – some appalling trade union band and a flat bed truck containing the 'Wexford Women's Knitting Circle' all knitting LIVE in the back of the truck with purple frozen hands! True.
What are you reading at the moment?
Usually I have four books on the go. A history. A novel. A biography. A book of poetry.
People are suspicious of do-gooders - how do you deal with the skepticism?
I have no time for skeptics.
There is an industry around giving and charity, and the public has become jaded with this - how do you combat this?
No there isn't and I don't know what you are talking about. People are not jaded – turn on your TV, see other humans in pain, try to help.
Do Mondays get any easier as you get older?
These questions don't.
Apart from Live Aid, what's your proudest achievement and why?
I'm not proud of it. It's something I did. It worked. I think I'm proud of the Commission for Africa. I'm not sure. I generally don't experience self-pride. Something’s done. You move on.
What have you got up your sleeve for the next couple of years?
Whatever it is, it’s staying there for now
What's the biggest issue people should be concerned about in 2012?
