If you have a hobby you’re passionate about but no-one to share it with, create a group of your own. Meetup groups The community group website www.meetup.com allows you to create your own club for free, online, in a few easy steps. Sign up, select a group name, hobby or theme, fill out the template and start creating events. The website will even make suggestions to potential members for you. Alison Stoody, group organiser and founder of Escape Dubai, set up the travel and adventure group for Dubai residents on Meetup, which has almost 3,000 members. ‘I recommend doing small events to get the word out about your group at first. Word of mouth is the best promotion. If you do good things and let people know about it, they’ll spread the news for you.’ Alternatively, it may be worth putting up flyers on your work notice board to see if anyone in your company is interested in joining. Take advantage of local notice boards in your apartment building or local supermarket, too. Creating a Facebook page for a club is simple: upload potential events, and invite friends and friends of friends to see who responds. Depending on your hobby or activity, choose public venues that you can meet in such as parks, beaches, cafes and malls, so everyone feels comfortable. Interesting hobbies will also attract members – look at Meetup first to see what groups exist and think outside the box – activities such as juggling, card tricks, stand-up comedy, baking groups and comic-book clubs may be a quirky alternative.
