Police seize 26kgs of heroin at the Oman border Discuss this article

UAE anti-narcotics agencies have foiled an attempt by an international gang to smuggle 26 kg of heroin into the UAE through Oman, a senior Dubai Police official said late yesterday.

Major General Abdul Jaleel Mahdi, Director of Dubai Police's Anti-narcotics Administration, said the police's anti-narcotics unit had been tipped off that the gang was planning to traffick large quantities of heroin from an Asian country to Oman's Diba Bea coast and then on to the UAE, WAM news agency reported.

Mahdi added that police from Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah carried out a near one month long surveillance operation, while maintaining direct contact with the Omani authorities.

A Gulf woman was subsequently arrested at the Omani border checkpoint in possession of 22kg of heroin, along with an associate.

Based on further information, police subsequently picked up three Asian members of the gang in possession of 4.27kg of the drug.

Another gang member, of Arab origin, was detained while trying to flee Dubai via the International Airport.
