The UAE was at the centre of the sporting and fashion worlds yesterday as the Dubai World Cup was celebrated at Meydan.

While the night’s sporting action belonged to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s Godolphin stables one lucky expat walked away with an unexpected award.

Dubai-born Yardis Apolfo was declared by many critics to be the fashion winner for her bold camel hair smock design.

“I’ve always been interested in camels and fashion,” said Yardis. “So this was my chance to combine my twin passions”.

“I just knew a smock made entirely out of camel hair would stand out from the crowd. Most of my friends spent more than Dhs20,000 on designer hats, handbags, dresses, shoes, thimbles and sunglasses but not me. Everything I wore – including my shoes and knee-length socks – was made from clumps of camel hair I found by the roadside.”

Yardis Apolfo’s win will come as a shock to many of Dubai’s fashionistas with bright hues, floral prints and lime green styles tipped to be this year’s favourite looks.
