Anyone with a passing interest in opera will tell you Mr Giuseppe Verdi was something of a big deal. And while you may not have taken the time to sit down with his epics like La Traviata, Aida and Rigoletto, we’re pretty sure you’d recognise the famous arias from these works, which have layered films, adverts and popular culture for decades.
So we’re pleased to see the master’s bicentennial won’t pass without note in Dubai, with a concert honouring Verdi’s work to take play at Raffles Dubai on October 10.
The one night gala dinner event, presented by Montegrappa, will feature performances from the Emirates Opera Project and Al Sharq Orchestra. Led by Mohamad Hamami and conducted by Martyn Bagnall, the musicians and vocalists will perform works Verdi’s best-known works, including ‘La Donna è Mobile’ from Rigoletto, ‘Libiamo ne' Lieti Calici’ from La Traviata, ‘Va, Pensiero’ from Nabucco and the ‘Grand March’ from Aida.
The Al Sharq Orchestra was established by Mohamad Hamami and Barbara James in April 2008. Today it comprises some 60 musicians of 22 nationalities, with a diverse repertoire ranging from traditional Arabic pieces, Western classical landmarks and original compositions.
The Emirates Opera Project represents a collaborative group of opera singers and musicians living in the UAE, such as Maria Glück, Christine Belbelian, Jerzy Olsson-Nagorski, Julia Teal Kermott, Robert Millner and Stanislav Fedyuk.
The gala dinner and concert takes place on Thursday October 10 at 7.30pm. For table bookings call 050 928 0085.
