There will be limited access to the Palm Jumeirah on New Year’s Eve, with the roads closed to general traffic.

Officials have announced the clampdown as thousands of people are expected to congregate for a glimpse of the fireworks display which is set to put Dubai in the record books.

But the 10,000-plus revellers expected to attend the Sandance NYE festival will be forced to make alternative transport arrangements.

The festival will be hosting shuttle buses running from the American University in Dubai to Atlantis Beach.

However the buses only run from 5pm until 9pm, meaning it’s important to be punctual to avoid disappointment. Meanwhile revellers will only be able to return from the event after 1am, with the Palm set to be completely closed to traffic for four hours from 9pm.

The news will also affect several other party and dinner events taking place on the Palm, including a gig by rapper Vanilla Ice at N'Dulge.

Dubai is attempting to break the record for ‘the world’s largest firework display’ with a six-minute display of more than 400,000 fireworks, launching from 100km of seafront across the Palm Jumeirah and The World Islands.

However to mitigate anticipated congestion it has been reported that the 7km-long manmade archipelago will be closed to traffic from 8am on New Year’s Eve until 6am the next morning.

The estimated 30,000 people living on the Palm will be issued special passes to allow them to gain access. Any other guests will be required to pre-register for passes, while even pass holders will not be able to enter or leave the Palm between 9pm and 1am.

Anyone attending Sandance, including ticket holders, table reservations, guestlist and competition winners, has been instructed to visit a purpose built ticket office at American University in Dubai (AUD), next to Nakheel Metro Station. Here wristbands will be distributed and guests will be bussed onto the Palm via an 'exclusive Sandance bus lane'. Residents of the Palm will still need to visit the ticket office to gain entry.

A spokeperson for Atlantis The Palm said: 'In conjunction with the world's largest firework display, Sandance promises its festival goers a great New Year's Eve with a smoother ride from AUD to Atlantis via an exclusive Sandance bus lane.'

Buses onto the Palm will only run from 5pm until 9pm, and this will be the only route to the event.

Revellers will then be unable to leave the festive until 1am, when transit buses off the Palm following the end of a four hour ban on traffic. The free buses will serve JBR/Marina, TECOM/The Greens, Mall of the Emirates Metro Station and the American University.

Fans heading to the Vanilla Ice gig at Atlantis club N'Dulge will also be offered bus travel from AUD between 4pm and 9pm, according to promoter's No.1 Events Facebook page, and while tickets will be on sale at the pick-up clubbers have been advised to purchase in advance. The event's advertised start time is 8pm.

Utter disgrace and so typical of Dubai - basically we will be imprisoned on the Palm between 9pm and 1am. I hope there are no medical emergencies or somebody - god forbid - wants to leave Sandance early. What happens if somebody wants to leave the palm between 9pm and 1am? I don't think this has been thought through properly.
