We dig up the juicy rumours, new openings and hot events in Dubai’s music and nightlife scene.
Having cleaned up at the Grammy Awards, bagging an impressive five gongs, US rap’s hottest property, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, have just announced they’re going to play Abu Dhabi. The pair, nominated for seven Grammys, were eventually awarded Best New Artist, Best Rap Album (for The Heist) and Best Rap Song as well as Best Rap Performance for their US number one smash ‘Thrift Shop’. The gig will take place on Friday April 25 and tickets go on sale at www.ticketmaster.ae on Wednesday February 19, starting at Dhs295.
Next up if you secretly like to hum ‘Sussudio’ in the shower, or blast ‘In the Air Tonight’ when you’re driving, meet like-minded people when Phil Collins tribute act Andrew James plays at the Millennium Airport Hotel on Thursday March 27 (04 702 8833). Entry is free, with barbecue and drinks packages for the event starting at Dhs250.
Next up there is an exciting new local release on the horizon. Sharjah-based Toofless has teamed up with Khartoum-based SufYan on the eight track EP Neospective Glitch. The two Sudanese artists, who’ve never met in person, have produced some more than decent sounding hip-hop and we highly recommend checking them out when the album drops on March 10. Finally, Jumeirah Beach Hotel has once again thrown open the doors to The Dhow & Anchor. The relaunch follows a lengthy refurb, and it’s now a light, airy, almost unrecognisable version of the old pub – check it out before it gets mobbed.
