A huge 24 metre long dinosaur skeleton has been unveiled in Dubai Mall.
The 155 million year old Diplodocus longus was flown in from the USA to take up residence as a permanent exhibit at the Grand Atrium.
And now Dubaians are being asked to enter a competition to name the emirate’s latest new resident.
Post what you think she (yes, it’s a girl) should be called on social media with the hashtag #NameTDMDino for the chance to win a five day family trip to Jurassic Park in Universal Studios, Orlando, USA – although you’ll have to impress a committee of scientists, dino experts and mall managers to win.
As well as towering over shoppers, visitors will have an opportunity for a ‘close-up’ look at the one-metre long fossil’s bone structure on display.
The free exhibition will also include a trained team of helpers to offer insights into the exhibited piece, which is understood to have been purchased at a cost of millions.
The Late Jurassic Period dinosaur is likely to attract visitors from around the world.
Featuring a long tail sweeping behind, and an equally slender long neck rising eerily high as if bracing for battle, the prehistoric dinosaur stands at an impressive, 24.4 metres long and 7.6 metres high.
Nearly 90 per cent of the fossil’s bones are original. Expects say the skeleton is unique, with the most original Diplodocus longus skeleton found prior to this only keeping 30 percent of its original bones.
Ms. Natalie Bogdanova, senior director of Business Development & Operations at Emaar Malls Group, said: ‘The largest creatures to walk on earth, dinosaurs have been popularised through novels and films.
'Now, for the first time in Dubai, visitors to The Dubai Mall have the opportunity to witness the mind-blowing magnificence of a life-size dinosaur exhibit, which also has the distinction of being the only one of its kind in the world.’
