Meanwhile the noughties will be represented with a performance from chirpy indie group Scouting for Girls and jazz-infused dance duo Goldfish.
And for the sound of now? The UAE’s very own electro-pop conquerors Hollaphonic will make their Sandance debut.
The event will be the first Sandance-branded gig since the troubled New Years’ Eve festival, when thousands of revellers endured waits of up to four hours to reach the event, and thousands more didn’t reach the concert at all.
In response festival organisers offered a refund to all ticketholders – and pledged a 50 percent discount on tickets for the next event.
This means Sandance NYE ticketholders who have a confirmed refund will be able to purchase as many discount tickets for the May 9 event as they purchased for New Years’ Eve gig – see below for full details.
Listed in the world record books as the most successful UK musical duo in history, the Pet Shop Boys have racked up more than 50 million album sales over a three-decade career, with more than 40 chart singles including ‘West End Girls’, ‘It’s a Sin’ and ‘Heart’.
Last seen on the sands in May 2012, close to exactly two years ago, Brit DJ Fatboy Slim revolutionised the chart scene of the late-’90s by pioneering the big beat sound, bringing electronic music firmly into mainstream with UK chart-topper ‘Praise You’ and hits ‘Gangster Trippin’ and ‘Right Here, Right Now’, all from 1998’s smash LP You've Come a Long Way, Baby.
Hip-hop troupe Arrested Development also made a notable mark on the other end of the same decade, steering a fresh Afro-centric approach which opposed the predominant gangster rap of the day, while borrowing from funk and soul to create a more danceable sound and conscientiously tackling more mature lyrical themes. We last saw them in Dubai with a February 2012 gig at Chi.
Guitar fans will welcome an appearance from kooky UK indie act Scouting for Girls, best known for UK number one ‘This Ain't a Love Song’, who despite penning just three LPs to date released a Greatest Hits album last year.
South African dance duo Goldfish are also no strangers to the sands at Atlantis, performing a stunning set at Sandance itself for NYE 2011, and the rocking their own headline gig at Atlantis a few months later. Also getting behind the decks is Saudi-Turkish DJ Omar Basaad, known for pioneering electronic sounds in the region by releasing the first Arabic Dubstep track on Beatport.
The bill is completed with the Sandance debut of Hollaphonic, the Dubai-born electro pop duo of DJ Greg Stainer and MC Olly Wood who have notched regional success with iTunes hits ‘I Don’t Want it to End’ and ‘Fabric’.
