Who knew the thespian – best known for his role as Dr. Derek Shepherd in the TV drama – was such a petrolhead?
Apparently he like to compete in prestigious pro-am events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans or the Daytona Sports Car Race, as a hobby. Porsche back both him and his racing team, Dempsey Proton Racing.
So what does an on-screen brain surgeon have in his garage? According to vehicle marketplace Carmudi, this lot:
1963 Porsche 356
Patrick splashed out all of his Can't Buy Me Love film earnings on a 1963 Porsche 356. The vintage cost him $9000 - which was actually his entire paycheck from the film. The car turned out to be the love of his life. Many of the cars that have joined his garage later on have been sold off due to lack of space, but the Porsche has managed to stick behind through all the garage spring cleanings. 1972 Jaguar E-Type with a V-12
In the past, Dempsey has also owned the 1972 Jaguar E-Type with a V-12. This vintage happens to be one of the most iconic sports cars in the whole of automobile history. It’s only fitting that a racing enthusiast like Dempsey owned one. Actually, Dempsey loves convertibles. The 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SE convertible is another staple in his collection of cars. He tends to call this one a “family car”. With a home in Malibu, California, it’s a very fitting car to be driving along the coast with the young ones. Porsche 911 GT3 RS
How could a racer so often on the track and backed by Porsche itself not own one of these? A classic which Dempsey has personalised with orange stripes and rims to really bring out the speed spirit. Mercedes SLS AMG
A more modern pick out of his garage and one that he had to leave behind due to speed limits not letting him go above 120 km/h, after which the car “really comes alive”. But not before having been spotted sitting under its gullwings by the paparazzi several times. Dempsey has reportedly turned down several movie roles because they didn’t excite him as much as the time he could spend racing. However, he’s always said that the Grey’s Anatomy cast and crew have always been supportive and flexible when it comes to his need for speed, so our beloved Dr. McDreamy might yet grace our screens for a while longer.
