The world’s largest ferris wheel is starting to take shape on the $1.6bn Bluewaters Island development, off the coast of Dubai’s Jumeirah Beach Residence.
The 210 metre-high Dubai Eye, which is being developed on a manmade island by Meeras Holding, will overtake the new High Roller in Las Vegas (standing at 167.6m) as the world's tallest such attraction. The ferris wheel will include 48 luxury capsules capable of holding 1,400 visitors and offer views of Dubai’s iconic landmarks such as Burj Al Arab, Palm Jumeirah and Burj Khalifa, according to Meeras.
Additionally, an 80 metre LED screen will be mounted on the wheel that’s hoped to create an innovative electronic platform for broadcasting movies, advertisements, and interactive information.
The area around the wheel will feature a bespoke ‘souq’ encircled by a promenade that will have alfresco dining outlets as well as a mix of retail stores and a food hall offering fresh produce in a traditional market atmosphere. Bluewaters Island will also host a boutique five star hotel and varied residential options.
As the pictures show, the large a-frames that will hold the wheel have been installed, giving a sense of the enormity of the project.
The access road to Bluewaters Island, currently being built by Habtoor Leighton Group, is expected to be completed by 2016.
