IPTL returns to Dubai with Roger Federer signed up
Ana Ivanovic, Goran Ivanisevic and Tomas Berdych join the Swiss at the December tournament
Roger Federer, one of the greatest tennis players of all time, is to play for the UAE Royals team in this year’s International Premier Tennis League (IPTL).
The unique team-format tennis event will take place at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium, on December 14-16.
Joining the Swiss legend, who has won more Grand Slam titles than any other man in the history of the game, will be Goran Ivanisevic, Tomas Berdych, Ana Ivanovic, Daniel Nestor and Kristina Mladenovic.
The world number two recently lost the US Open final to Novak Djokovic - the Serb's 10th crown, compared with Federer's 17 - but will count on 'home' advantage when playing in Dubai later this year. The 34-year-old has long used the emirate as a training base.
Now in its second year, The IPTL is a team-based tennis league featuring five teams from across Asia – Indian Aces, Singapore Slammers, Japan Warriors, Philippine Mavericks – with games played in each country. The League begins in Japan on December 2, and the final will be held on Singapore on December 20.
India’s current test cricket captain Virat Kohli co-owns the UAE Royals. Speaking at the launch announcement, he said: 'I have always followed tennis with great interest and today I am glad to be part of a professional tennis league team.
'I am a huge fan of Roger Federer and with him joining the UAE Royals, my decision to be on board with the team was firm. The UAE Royals feature some of tennis’ greatest players and I am confident about the prospects of the team in the IPTL. I am also excited about the format of the IPTL, which I am sure will drive further interest in the game of tennis.'
