DXBeach at Zero Gravity to feature Idris Elba, Clean Bandit, Klingande, Mike Mago and 1Xtra DJ MistaJam.
Idris Elba will be the star attraction at the second installment of Zero Gravity’s DXBeach on Friday October 23. British electronic group Clean Bandit, French house duo Klingande, Dutch music producer Mike Mago and BBC Radio 1Xtra DJ MistaJam are also on the bill.
The 43-year-old Londoner is best known for his roles in hit TV series’ Luther and The Wire, as well as Hollywood blockbusters American Gangster, Thor and Pacific Rim. But he also comes with plenty of musical pedigree.
The Golden Globe winner, hotly-tipped to become the next James Bond, has been shaking and stirring up the music scene for almost a decade, under the moniker Driis.
In 2006, Elba released the critically acclaimed Big Man EP, before going on to lay down tracks for Tyler Perry’s movie Madea Goes to Jail, as well as producing the intro for Jay Z’s seminal American Gangster LP. His influences can best be described as eclectic, with the star often drawing on rare grooves and hip-hop during sets. He was last in Dubai at Sandance in 2013.
His appearance comes as Star Trek Beyond, the actor’s next big blockbuster movie, also roles into town, with the British actor widely expected to star as the picture’s main bad guy.
Joining Elba are fellow Brits Clean Bandit, an electronic house group consisting of members Jack Patterson, Luke Patterson, Grace Chatto and Neil Amin-Smith. The band are known for their unique mixes of electronic music mixed with classical pieces by composers such as Mozart and Shostakovich. Earlier this year, their single Rather Be, which featured vocals by Jess Glynne (who performed at the inaugural DXBeach event), earned them a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording.
Next up, British DJ and BBC Radio 1Xtra presenter Pete ‘MistaJam’ Dalton. His multi-genre sets includes hip hop and grime, and his broadcasts are considered to be the pre-eminent slot for urban music in the UK. Outside the studio, ‘Jam’ has performed at Fabric in London, Space in Ibiza and Glastonbury Festival, among many others.
The one-day concert in Dubai Marina will also see French producers Klingande - who are known for their hit saxophone groove song Jubel - take to the stage, as well as Dutch producer Mike Mago will pull huge house tracks – including the smash collaboration with Dragonette, Outlines – from his globally-respected repertoire.
Daytime entertainment includes live music, local DJ sets, water sports and complimentary spa treatments from SensAsia Urban Spa. Doors open at noon, with the concert running through until 3am.
Zero Gravity is offering a limited space DXBrunch between noon and 3pm on the venue’s upper deck and terrace, priced from Dhs495 (standard package). This will include access to DXBeach.
