VIDEO: Star Wars trailer shows Abu Dhabi epic battle
Star Wars: The Force Awakens final trailer again features a battle scene in Abu Dhabi, with Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia also appearing.
The final Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer has been released.
With Abu Dhabi's Empty Quarter having played a major role in all other previous sneak peeks at the most anticipated film in decades, the final piece of the teaser campaign from Disney and LucasFilm eludes far more to the plot.
The UAE's stunning desert scenery still features, most predominantly in a large battle scene, but much more is made of what we can expect from the lead characters Daisy Ridley (scavenger Rey) and John Boyega (Stormtrooper Finn). There are also appearance for iconic characters from the original series, namely, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill ), Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher).
Excitement about the release of this latest installment had been ramped up on Sunday when the movie's official poster dropped, before tickets for UK and US screenings on opening night then went on sale. Several cinema websites in both countries crashed as a result of the rush.
Then on Monday, two short teaser clips featuring the orange and white rollerball droid BB-8, and a swarm of TIE Fighters, whet the appetite even more ahead of the evening's big reveal.
The seventh Star Wars film, and first since the widely-criticised prequals (1999,2002, 2005), is directed by JJ Abrams and follows the travails, as far as we can tell, of Finn, a bad guy turned good, and his fight to protect Rey, whom he meets, we assume, on Jakku, or 'Abu Dhabi' as we know it!
In September, Abu Dhabi's role in the movie was highlighted by the release on Facebook of a 360 degree fully immersive minute-long video. The technology allows users to manipulate their view of the clip as it plays out either via the click and drag of a mouse (on desktop) or simply titling the screen (on mobile). Captioned as, 'Speed across the Jakku desert from Star Wars: The Force Awakens', the exclusive clip was the clearest indication yet that an epic battle took place there.
Putting the viewer in the pilot's seat of what we believe to be a desert bike, not too dissimilar to Skywalker's iconic Landspeeder, possibly ridden by Ridley's character, the clip starts beneath the shell of a downed Star Destroyer, one of the Empire's military ships. It then launches out over the desert, weaving between numerous large metal fragments of what we can only assume were previously airborne fighters. At one point, 'you' are joined by a gurgling, murmuring rival, while smoke bellows from another passing ship.
