A huge fire has engulfed the five star Address Downtown Dubai just a few hours before a world record firework attempt was due to start at the nearby Burj Khalifa.
Around two hours after the blaze was first reported, Dubai Media Office confirmed that 14 minor injuries had been suffered by those in the hotel, but that by and large the reaction of emergency services and staff had prevented a greater number of casualties.
New Year's Eve celebrations went ahead despite the huge damage caused to the property, which is in close proximity to Dubai Mall, Souk Al Bahar, and the world's tallest building.
The fire reportedly started on the 20th floor of the 63-floor skyscraper, which continues popular restaurants and bars like Cut by Wolfgang Puck, Calabar and Neos. There has been no confirmation what started it.
Amidst the shock at the incident, Dubai residents rallied, sparking a social media campaign to help house those affected by the blaze.
The hashtag #NeedAnAddress was kicked off around 10pm and by midnight was appearing on Twitter in its thousands as people rushed to offer their spare bedrooms, sofas, showers and more.
Dubai Tourism also confirmed they would be laying on accommodation.
