Yes, the velocity of his musical progression may be slower than a logjam on Sheikh Zayed Road, but that doesn’t stop us looking forward to getting down for a Hootenanny boogie. Holland OBE has been churning out predictable big-band R&B and blues since time began (or, more precisely, since he left his former band, Squeeze), playing every nook, cranny and broom cupboard of the UK circuit on what seems like a never-ending tour of his homeland.
Jools doesn’t excel especially at singing, band-leading or playing the piano, but has long been dining out on his eloquence as a British broadcasting institution: his role in promoting new music to the world through long-running TV show Later… makes him an icon. Hear him swing on the second night of this year’s Skywards Dubai International Jazz Festival.
