Of the four Js headlining this year’s un-jazzy Jazz Fest, we’re most excited by the only Dubai first-timer, Jason Mraz. The perpetually hat-wearing American has a laid-back soulful groove – think Jack Johnson or Chris Murray – that’s lacking from the straight up pop of James Morrison and Blunt. He appears here with long-standing percussionist Toca Rivera, who we hope will add some dynamism to the night.
The rest of the bill includes an earlier set from US fusion veterans Spyro Gyra – the most jazzy act to get near the main stage – and Scottish songwriter Sandi Thom, memorable for her quirky 2006 hit ‘I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker (With Flowers in My Hair)’.
