A Dubai clubber picks out his personal favourite nights out in Dubai, his top tunes, and the hottest bars he hangs out in.
Where I go... for a big night: A few biggies I’m really looking forward to are Armin Van Buuren this weekend at the Madinat Arena, and Jesse Cook, David Gray and Robin Gibb at the Jazz Fest. I’m into the big events. I also really like Coco Cabana at Oasis Beach Hotel or Trader Vic’s.
...during the week, for a quiet chat: Any beach-side, open-air bar or lounge, like Barasti, QD’s, the Irish Village or Vu’s.
...purely for the music: It has to be Buddha Bar.
My favourite local DJs are: David Newsum, from the Conception nights, and Madjam, the Peppermint resident.
To hear my favourite music I go to... I’m into everything from progressive, dark house, trance and lounge to alternative and even classic rock. Dubai is packed with venues and events where I can hear all these different types of music so I go all over.
The best night I’ve ever had in Dubai was... If there was one gig that profoundly affected me over a long period of time it was Above & Beyond at Peppermint. You could tell the guys were on a happy trip – the tracks they threw on the floor were fabulous (of which ‘I Can’t Sleep You’re So Far Away From Me’ had to be the highlight).
What do you think of Dubai’s nightlife scene in general? Dubai’s nightlife is unique with little mutations every month, adding new clubs to the city, bringing in top DJs and loosing ideas that don’t work. Kudos to Dubai 92fm’s dance weekend radio show which has introduced international DJ’s like Armin, Carl Cox, Matt Darey to this part of the world.
