The super-cool DJ talks about crowd interaction, his best nights out, and, weirdly, The Spice Girls. Intriguing.
The latest Deep Club guest DJ tells Time Out about crowd interaction, Neil Young, being called white trash and loving the Spice Girls movie.
The last time I came to Dubai, I thought... Happy days! I really like Dubai, it’s such a great city and the people are so friendly... the crowd is always up for it too, so I always have fun.
The last time I interacted with the crowd was... The last time I DJed – I always do it. It’s very important to me as a DJ to interact with the crowd. The only time it becomes a problem is when people are passing tequila shots over and spilling it on the mixing desk!
The last time I saw someone from my schooldays was... Actually, three of my best friends are from school, but I saw someone recently on Facebook that I hadn’t seen in a while – it’s great for that.
The last track I played was... The re-edit I did of Goldfrapp’s ‘Happiness’... it’s such a great track and I played it at Cielo – I am totally in love with Goldfrapp’s new album.
The last time I got annoyed by another DJ was... When I got called ‘white trash’ by Lil Louis back in 97. The set timings got mixed up so he thought he was meant to be playing while I was, and he told someone to ‘get that white trash off’ – not very nice is it?
The last time I was blown away by another DJ was... Larry Levan at the Paradise Garage, 1979. Words cannot describe!
The last tiny club I played was... Cielo in New York – It was my Dig Deeper night and it was fantastic. Such a small intimate club and the crowd were dancing all night... I normally play really big clubs, so it was great to play in this amazing, small venue. It was definitely my favourite gig in New York since the Ark days.
The last celebrity I saw in one of my crowds was... The DJ James Zabiela at my gig in Miami... Again, it was my Dig Deeper night and James was out there in the thick of it. It was such a great night and I had lots of fun playing.
The last live music gig I went to was... Neil Young in London. He absolutely blew me away – for a 62-year-old he is unbelievable – he has the energy of a kid of 18 and is amazing to watch. He was incredible. That said, I am really looking forward to seeing Radiohead in June.
The last great movie I saw was... Spice World. It really was a great film!
The last time someone commended my style was... My girlfriend liked a new top I bought last week. She works in fashion and is usually very critical of the clothes I buy, so it was a real compliment!
The last time someone complained about my style was... Almost daily! I have my own individual style and that is not always to everyone’s taste – I do love the 70s look!
