Dubai DJ escapes the heat and heads to Ibiza for the summer. Time Out pins him down to find out about his plans for his trip to the White Isle.
You have the Letherebehouse nights in Dubai, but what’s your Ibiza pedigree? This is my fourth full summer season DJing in Ibiza. I first came over in 2004 for Retro, a classic house night similar to Letherebehouse, at Eden. Since that first gig I’ve played Eden several times more, as well as Es Paradis, Privilege, Hush, Opium, Plastik, Es Vive and more.
So which Dubai nights have been brought over to Ibiza this year? Letherebehouse has a weekly residency at Opium every Saturday; the format has slightly changed to celebrate the history of house so, unlike Dubai, a few modern house tunes will be played. Then on Thursday at Hush there’s a night called New Dawn, which fuses New Dawn’s Dubai nights together – fans of Audio Tonic, Revolve, MoJo and Cognito should like it.
Good plugging! Any more? Yep – in July, we have a one-off Audio Tonic party at Sol Serena in Cala Conte, an early evening beach party with Zero 7, Mr Mr and myself that will continue to Pete Tong’s Wonderland in Eden. Also, Pukka Up and Gorgeous Dubai are doing a joint boat party on June 23, followed by a Pukka Up event at Es Paradis.
If any readers are heading to Ibiza in the latter half of the month, where should they go? Mondays have Roger Sanchez at Pacha, Sven Väth and Cocoon at Amnesia, Pukka Up at Es Paradis and of course DC10 with Circo Loco. Tuesdays have only one good night and that’s Defected at Pacha, at least until Carl Cox returns to Space on July 8. Wednesdays have Subliminal at Pacha, or, for a real carnival, La Troya at Space. If you fancy an after-party, Shipwrecked with myself is probably the only legal one on the island. Thursdays have New Dawn at Hush if you fancy saving a little cash, otherwise it’s all about Cream at Amnesia; they have the usual trance DJs in the main room, but the new terrace offers guests like Sebastian Leger, Tocadisco, Dave Spoon and Angello, Ingrosso & Axwell. There’s also a four-hour set from Eric Prydz. David Guetta also plays at Pacha.
What about the weekends? Friday is possibly the best night for big events, the most talked about, of course, being Pete Tong’s Wonderland at Eden, which is supported weekly by Groove Armada. At Amnesia there’s Manumission, and Pacha have replaced Tongy with The Swedish House Mafia: Axwell, Ingrosso and Angello. Saturdays are traditionally the weakest night in Ibiza – Hed Kandi is probably the biggest name there. And on Sundays there is a small party at Space – We Love Sundays – which runs from 4pm-6am; a lot shorter than the 22-hour marathons of previous years, but with guests such as Groove Armada, Tom Novy and Fatboy Slim. There’s also Judgement Sundays at Eden with Judge Jules, but in all honesty, who cares?
What are the big nights that will be coming up down the line? Tiësto will be starting at Privilege in July to make Mondays challenge Fridays for the most competitive night out, and of course the legend that is Carl Cox will be on weekly at Space every Tuesday.
