We’re bowled over by the sheer eclecticism of the Chill Out Festival. The first day sees vintage hip-hop trio De La Soul share a stage with vitriolic Algerian-French punk Rachid Taha, local art-folk songwriter Noush Like Sploosh (herself appearing with a German visual artist), 2009 Middle Eastern beatbox champion Hirabeat and jazzy soul singer Rachel Callidine, among others.
The second day is even more diverse. Boppy guitar-poppers The Kooks (pictured) are preceded by Afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen, Mumbai alt-electro duo Shaaîr and Func, funk-turned-ambient soul singer Hamdan Al-Abri and hard rockers Nikotin. Oh, and did we mention electro kings Magnetic Man and Moodyman at Friday’s Electric Chill after-party? A welcome antidote to some of Dubai’s blander billings. Dhs200 (single day advance), Dhs250 (single day on the door), Dhs350 (both days). 4pm-midnight, Friday April 20-Saturday 21. Dubai Media City Amphitheatre, www.timeouttickets.com
