Right now, the Filipino music scene is thriving in the UAE. Over the years, Dubai has proved itself a Pinoy favourite, with both international stars stopping by to play and a thriving undercurrent of local talent. Favourite Filipino venues in the emirates showcase musical talents across the musical styles. But among these genres, it’s rock music which undisputedly takes the lead.
Rakrakan in 2008 and 2009 and BisRock in 2011 are among the most successful Filipino rock festivals the emirates have seen. Featuring notable and best bands in the history of Philippine music industry, these bands joined together to amuse and entertain Filipino rock music fanatics and enthusiasts.
Now, on Friday May 9 at Al Nasr Leisureland, the all-new Pinoy Rock Festival will bring three of the Philippines’ best heavy metal and rock bands for one flat-out night of rock ’n’ roll. Whether you’re a Filipino devotee or a music lover looking for new sounds, we bring you up to speed who to watch.
Formed in 1997, Slapshock are considered one of the most distinct bands in the Philippines to date, thanks largely to their imitable sound and style, releasing gold and platinum selling albums. They made their debut performance in Dubai at the Desert Rock Festival 2008, joining notable bands like Muse, Korn and Velvet Revolver. This five-piece ensemble have come a long way, landing a recording collaboration in the US with apl.de.ap, a member of the Grammy award-winning group The Black Eyed Peas.
Siakol are one of the most successful and critically acclaimed Pinoy rock bands of the '90s.The band have released several singles and albums that consistently topped the charts in NU107 and radio stations all over the Philippines. Their albums gained commercial success beginning with Quadruple Platinum 'Tayo Na Sa Paraiso' followed by 'Rekta', 'Pantasya', 'Karoling', 'Sa Pag-ikot Ng Mundo' and 'Hiwaga'.
Another rock icon whose music is a mixture of punk and alternative rock. Their breakout single ‘Multo sa Paningin (Multong Bakla)’ from their debut album was a great hit and gained massive airplay on many rock stations across the country.
Dubbed as the ‘Prettiest Doll Alive’, Barbie's music is characterized by a rather eccentric, but appealing vocal style accompanied by her distinct guitar work.
