Kings of Leon at Atlantis The Palm Last spotted on these soils when they performed at the inaugural Abu Dhabi F1 in 2009, the intervening five years have been far from quiet for the grandsons of Leon. Peaking in fame and exposure with 2008’s double whammy of radio-jammers ‘Sex on Fire’ and ‘Use Somebody’, and winning two UK Brit Awards, the Followill brothers found every mountain climbed must be tumbled back down. Amid infighting and disorder, the quartet pulled the plug midway through their 2011 US tour. But the band once hailed as rock’s saving sons by every indie critic with a pen in their duffel coat were far from down and out, striking back last year with album number six, Mechanical Bull, a stripped-down return to their roots, which picked up largely positive reviews. Now a decade in, and having learned how to straddle the borderline between radio-friendly unit shifters and credible, mature rock, the Kings of Leon legacy seems secure for years to come – and after a five-year wait, this outdoor gig promises to be something special. Dhs385 advance, Dhs450 on the door, Dhs600 VIP. 5pm-3am. Atlantis The Palm, Palm Jumeirah (055 200 4321).
Trevor Noah at Ductac Following from an impressive three-night, sell-out run at the same venue just two months earlier, top comic Noah is back by popular demand for two more nights. Until Thursday 29. Ductac, Mall of the Emirates, Al Barsha www.timeouttickets.com
Abri and The Funk Radius at Jazz@Pizza Express Practically a UAE supergroup, this funky outfit brings together the soulful voice of Hamdan Al Abri, the jazz-influenced grooves of brothers Rony and Elie Afif, Jay Wud’s bluesy guitar, a Stax-style horn section and plenty of head-nodding attitude. Expect to hear a mix of familiar songs reworked into a funk-soul context and the group’s own groovy concoctions. Free. 9.30pm. Jazz@PizzaExpress, Mövenpick Hotel Jumeirah Lakes Towers (04 324 7324).
Analog Room at Q Underground This underground electro night serves up wilfully intelligent and eclectic nuggets from a revolving door of guest DJs. Dhs75 (ladies free before midnight). 10pm-3am, The Q Underground, Holiday Inn Al Barsha, www.analogroom.com.
Black Sabbath in Abu Dhabi Just over 35 years since Ozzy Osbourne was fired from the band, the reunited Black Sabbath of Ozzy, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler (founding drummer Bill Ward is sadly absent) reach the Middle East for the first time, plugging last year’s 13 – the band’s first new LP with Ozzy since the aforementioned firing. These guys basically wrote the rule book for what heavy metal came to be – both musically and in their OTT attitudes – so expect lots of earnest tributes to one of music’s ugliest, but most-endearing genres. Check our interview with Butler at www.timeoutdubai.com. Dhs295-795. 7.30pm. Du Arena, Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, www.thinkflash.ae.
