Get to know DJ Nic Fanciulli before he plays at Dubai’s Provocateur on April 9
He’s a massive fan of Disco, hailing Earth Wind and Fire, Sister Sledge and Nile Rodgers as his musical heroes. But what else should you know about Nic Fanciulli?
He’ll be travelling for 10 days and to 8 cities on one tour but he won’t be exhausted by the time he gets to Dubai I’ll be alright, it’s happening so quickly I won’t get the chance to feel tired. Not only does he love playing at nightclubs here like Provocateur (April 9) but Dubai is his favourite holiday destination Dubai’s probably where I spend most of my free time. I go on holiday with my family for two weeks and just relax. My son loves it. We usually stay at one of the hotels at Mina A’Salam, go to Al Qasr, do a bit of snowboarding at Mall of the Emirates…Dubai has the best food in the world. I always have to go to the shopping centre and eat at this Persian place which has amazing food. Not so cheap though, is La Petite Maison. They have one in Nice and London too so I love going there.
He’s also going to Toronto, Manila, Tokyo, Mumbai, Madrid on his tour, but he’ll change his set especially for Dubai For Dubai I make my set shorter because the style of music I do isn’t as popular there as it is say in Toronto. In Toronto, the set will be five or six hours and I can get away with it but Dubai’s more like one and a half. It has to be shorter, more condensed and less aggressive. I try to play songs an audience would like but I would never play music I don’t like to please a particular place.
His collaborators often choose him A lot of the collaborations I’ve done are via word of mouth so someone said to Underworld that they like my sound and I remixed their song. The same happened with Kylie Minogue. There are so many people I’d love to work with that I’ll probably never get to.
DJ Paris Hilton may have just landed herself a residency in Las Vegas and currently has ones in Atlantic City, New Jersey and Amnesia, Ibiza – but she’s not his cup of tea despite her ability to play live I always say if you haven’t got anything good to say, don’t say it. It’s not my cup of tea, not my bag. Anyone would be silly not to play live, it’s not rocket science. You’d get caught out in a second. The mixing is not what’s important, it’s keeping the dancefloor busy and that’s what DJs should worry about in my opinion. There’s nothing like clearing a dancefloor. His motto is the bigger the better It sounds strange but I prefer a large crowd. When you’re playing to 200 people you can’t hide. I get butterflies but just get on with it. Then again the day I stop getting butterflies about playing, is the day I should stop.
Making an album isn’t the easiest thing he’s done I think I want [this year to be about] my first and last album. It’s taken me five years to almost complete it and it should be done by the end of this year hopefully. I’ve done mixtapes before but not an artist album.
