You’d expect to run into a few ‘important people’ at a club called VIP Room – in the past, it’s hosted everyone from Akon to Will Smith and French Montana. While the On Air series has been running for more than a year, an urban twist has been added in the form of Hip-Hop on Air Thursdays. NBA team Toronto Raptors’ official DJ plays on Thursday September 24. Free (reservations recommended). Thu 11pm-3am. Ongoing. VIP Room, JW Marriott Marquis Dubai, Business Bay (052 881 8888).
4 Audio Rehab
This regular Saturday night event caters to anyone who enjoys laid-back underground house vibes, but still with a little sparkle and glamour. DJs Sam Farsio and Kay Tek are behind the decks playing all house styles from deep to tech and soulful. Free Sat 9pm-2am. Atelier M, Pier 7, Dubai Marina (04 450 7766).
5 Destination Dubai Comedy Jam Comedy, music, drinks and a casual dress code… sounds like a decent, fuss-free night out to us. While we don’t currently have anything to go on other than it’s the very first one, we reckon it will be worth checking out, since four stand-ups – WYardie, Will E Robo, Axel Blake and Travis Jay – from the UK and US are on the bill, followed by a night of urban music from DJs Shero and Brooklyn. Not bad for Dhs100. Plus, ladies get two free drinks before midnight. Dhs100. Fri September 25, 8pm-3am. N’Dulge, Atlantis The Palm, Palm Jumeirah (050 738 1388).
6 Deep Crates Cartel present Quantic When it comes to alternative nights in the city, Deep Crates Cartel know how to throw a party. Expect a night of afrobeat, electronic, soul and Latin sounds fused with contemporary street music and culture, with performances from British musician Quantic and local artist Lobito Brigante. Dhs100. Thu September 24. 9pm-3am. The Music Room, Majestic Hotel Tower, Bur Dubai (050 248 4054).
7 Soulroots at House of Afrika
Check out Dutch DJ duo Soulroots, who started making music five years ago and have quickly risen in the ranks, working alongside afro-house artists such as Black Coffee, Culoe De Song and Mi Casa. Their own night, Liberation, has become one of Amsterdam’s leading house nights, while their music mixes uplifting, melodic deep house with the raw energy of afro-house. Free Fri September 25, 6pm-3am. The Dek on 8, Media One Hotel, Dubai Media City (04 427 1000).
8 Open Mic Night There’s no shortage of open mic nights in the city, with some even getting the odd talent scout in to watch. Every Tuesday at Original Wings & Rings in DIFC, from 8pm to 10pm, performers get 15 minutes to impress and be in with a chance of winning a trip to Sri Lanka for two nights, an iPhone 6 or a Dhs1,000 dine-in voucher for the restaurant. Free Tue 8pm-10pm. Original Wings & Rings, Liberty House, DIFC (04 359 6900).
9 Urban Education Led by Rone Jaxx, whose Urban Education show on Radio 1 is one of the longest-running urban music shows in the UAE, partygoers can expect funk and Motown at this weekly night. DJ 3GK is also on the decks. Free Thu 9pm-3am. Story Rooftop Lounge, Dubai Knowledge Village (050 350 1050).
10 Motion ladies’ night
There aren’t many ladies’ nights that cater to one genre of music, so we were chuffed at the launch of ‘Motion’. It’s exclusively devoted to house and Smokingroove, the DJ duo who won Best Dubai DJ at Time Out Dubai’s Music & Nightlife Awards, this year. Ladies get free drinks all night and there’s a happy hour from 10pm to 11pm. Free Tue 10pm-3pm. Cinnamon, Radisson Blu Hotel, Downtown Dubai (052 736 9669).
