Time Out Dubai has an Darryl McDaniels interview after the member of Run DMC came to Dubai as a guest of Adidas for Sole DXB. Hear about his music
What do you think of Dubai? People made it seem like it was going to be crazy, like Vegas, but it’s laid-back, and the architecture is amazing.
Run DMC are pioneers of hip-hop, what do you think of today’s scene? It’s more progressive now, and if it wasn’t for us breaking down barriers and pushing hip-hop forward, some rappers wouldn’t be getting those big deals now.
How important is your relationship with Adidas after all these years? Rival sneaker companies have offered us contract – this was when [Jam Master] Jay was alive – and we had to say we can’t take the money. Our relationship with Adidas means something. “Three stripes for life.” It’s empowering.
You’re passionate about comics, too. Why do they appeal to you? Comic books were part of my life before hip-hop, then that came alive with the graffiti. When we started hip-hop dressed like comic books because those images are so powerful.
Which rappers do you rate? Kendrick Lamar – he’s huge – and also Mos Def and Nas.
