Time Out Dubai has Bananas club night review, a new house, 80s and funk night at Story Rooftop Lounge from the DJs in Dubai behind Superheroes.

Bananas, the brainchild of DJs Rutherford and Ben Echo and a new house and electro night at Story Rooftop Lounge, aims to be a party that is unpretentious and fun – one where the crowd aren’t too cool to hit the dancefloor.
We arrive just before midnight and can hear the thumping beats from the bottom of the bar’s elevator, which heightens anticipation, but once we step inside, it’s disappointingly sparse, and even as the night draws on, the numbers don’t seem to peak much beyond 30. Part of the venue is even cordoned off so the handful of guests are kept to a smaller area, but it still feels quite empty.
It’s a shame, because despite a low turn-out, Bananas has the potential to be a quality and fun night that provides an alternative to the often snooty, guestlist-only events that many clubbers encounter in the city.
Here, plastic, inflatable fruits hang from the bar and Rutherford and Echo play New York house, dance tunes with soulful samples and ’80s grooves on EDM beats. There’s an uplifting vibe to the music policy, which is echoed by the crowd, who, though few in number, do get up and dance.
Rutherford and Echo take clubbers on a journey without being too serious, getting them singing along and raising their hands. The night pulls in a trendy gathering – guys don stylish yet scruffy man-buns and checked shirts, while the ladies sport cool boho styles. The organisers aim to have an international DJ on the decks once a month – the event launched with Dub Pistols frontman Barry Ashworth taking making a headline appearance.
The line-up of guest DJs is yet to be confirmed, but in the meantime, the event will satisfy those looking for a house night where they can cut loose. We just hope the new slot gets more people through the door – maybe then we can truly go bananas for it. Free. Fri 8pm-3pm. Story Rooftop Lounge, Holiday Inn Express, Dubai Knowledge Village (04 453 543704 453 5437).
The bottom line Fun house night, but don’t expect a big crowd.
