More nightlife to try this week, including the Mile High Club
Apparently not content with catering to the city’s shirt-and-tie, post-work businessmen with Bar Zar and JamBase, Madinat Jumeirah has opened up a new venue offering – it says here – ‘entertainment for fashionistas’. Ordinarily we’d raise our eyebrows at this – another swanky night out? Goodness! – but it does seem that Atelier’s creators are doing more than just waving around the word ‘exclusive’ and hoping for the best. For a start the venue, based in Mina A’ Salam, has six areas offering different experiences: a main bar, a main room, a house room, an R&B room, a smoking lounge and, yes, a VIP area.
Currently the promoters are keeping the identities of their resident and guest DJs a secret, hoping that the Atelier name will become strong enough to keep people coming back. But they have released details about the entertainment, which includes choreographed and freestyle dancers, a violinist who will accompany the house DJ after midnight and special vocal artists. There are also plans to host catwalk fashion shows in the future.
But if you’re planning to check it out, do plan ahead. While dropping in is an option, only a limited number of places are available; instead, you’d be better off emailing firstname.lastname@example.org to get on the ‘access list’, which guarantees entry before 11pm.
Since most of Dubai is a-leaving on a jet plane at the minute, it seems like a curiously appropriate for Dubai to see the return of The Mile High Club, a house and electro night that aims to pull in the city’s numerous aircrew members. The Mile High Club already ran for a little while at Lotus One, of course, but this relaunched version will be taking up residence inside Chi once a month. There, it will turn the club into an aircraft-themed night with, of course, discounts for Face card holders.
And, despite the name, this is no fly-by-night event. Nope, organiser Mark Pickup (pictured) – you’ll have seen him around town over the last year, playing the likes of Plan B and The Apartment – has already put the night to the test at home in the UK. There, The Mile High Club ran at five-star hotels across the north of England, and featured go-go dancers and fancy dress themes. Can we expect the same here? Mark couldn’t be pushed on the subject, so you’ll have to find out for yourselves.
