Dubai clubbing news: From VIP Room to Barsha's underground scene
Boombox sneaks in as Crates snake out, and a new cut from Juliana Down
Time Out Dubai staff
We dig up the juicy rumours, new openings and hot events in Dubai’s music and nightlife scene.
Despite only recently celebrating its first anniversary, VIP Room, the snazzy nightclub in the world’s tallest hotel, the JW Marriott Marquis, is previewing its new terrace at the end of the week. We’ll give you the verdict on the new space as soon as we stop by and check it out.
As we mentioned the other week, despite the sad news that Deep Crates Cartel’s Thursday night at Casa Latina has ceased, fans of alternative music will be pleased to hear that Boombox is moving into the vacant slot from The Music Room. We’ve heard that the Al Barsha nightspot will be kicking off with Boombox on Thursday February 20 and the rumour is that hip-hop star True Justice, AKA TJ Regalado, is going to be one of the acts appearing in the first few weeks.
Another night has also found a new venue. Pukka Up, featuring DJs Mark Robinson and Chris Wright, will be starting a monthly event on the third Thursday of every month at Movida in the Radisson Royal Hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road. The first night from the Ibiza-inspired tongue-cheek brand launches on Thursday January 23.
On the local talent front we’ve heard that award-winning Dubai-based band Juliana Down are close to releasing their latest album. We’ve been given a sneak preview of their single ‘Take Off’ and with its polished production, soaring riffs and an anthemic chorus, rock fans are certainly in for a treat.
Finally, we’re excited to hear that Brazilian DJ Anna will be bringing her unique blend of house and techno to the city as part of her world tour. She’ll be appearing at 360˚ on Friday January 31 – we’re expecting big things when she takes to the decks as part of her international tour.
