Healthy juice and smoothie recipes crafted by Talise Nutrition
The healthy eating highlight of this week is Global Wellness Day, which takes place on Saturday June 13. This year will be the first time the UAE has participated in the event, with Talise Spa at Madinat Jumeirah hosting a day of free yoga classes and healthy living workshops, including a juicing class with Talise Nutrition’s executive wellbeing chef, Gabriele Kurz. Ahead of the event, we look at common health concerns and situations many will find themselves in this summer, and ask chef Gabriele to recommend ideal juice and smoothie recipes to help support your lifestyle.
If you are fasting for Ramadan… ‘You’ll need something before sunrise that supplies lasting energy. I recommend this recipe for Cashew Coconut Mylk. It’s so smooth and velvety, but not very sweet, so it doesn’t spike blood sugar levels, making it a good pick-me-up. Cashew milk is the creamiest of homemade nut milks. The nuts blend entirely into the water and so none go to waste in the process, and they retain all their fibre and nutrients. Combining this milk with coconut adds another healthy fat, and it tastes great, too.’
Cashew Coconut Mylk Ingredients 20g raw cashews, soaked overnight 200ml still water 50ml coconut milk 1 tablespoon toasted coconut flakes 1 tablespoon agave syrup or honey 1 pinch sea salt Method Discard the water the cashews have been soaking in and rinse thoroughly until water runs clear. Place the cashews, still water, coconut milk, honey and salt into a blender. Process on high speed for 20-30 seconds.
If you are pregnant… ‘Drinking juice during pregnancy is an excellent way for mum and baby to absorb essential vitamins. B Vitamins and Vitamin C are very important, as is magnesium. However, be careful with ginger in juices. Green smoothies are great. This recipe for tomato and celery juice produces a savoury drink that tastes like a light gazpacho. It’s a highly aromatic juice with plenty of health benefits. Celery is a perfect source of vitamin B1, B2, B6 and vitamin C, with rich supplies of potassium, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, sodium and plenty of essential amino acids. The important minerals in this juice balance the body’s blood pH, neutralising acidity.’
Savoury Tomato Celery Juice Ingredients 2 tomatoes 2 celery stalks ½ lemon, peeled 1 small cucumber ½ red bell pepper 4 stalks parsley ½ teaspoon olive oil or flax seed oil Method Juice all ingredients in a juicer. Stir in the oil at the end. Serve immediately.
If you are feeling stressed or anxious… ‘Eliminating toxins and acidity within the body is a great way to get rid of anxiety and stress. Try this detoxing juice recipe with green papaya and apple. Unripe (green) papaya contains higher amounts of papain than ripe papaya. This enzyme dissolves toxins in the body. Try this freshly pressed juice every morning on an empty stomach.’
Green Papaya Apple Juice Ingredients 2 apples 1 green papaya Bunch of parsley ½ cup spinach leaves Method Juice all ingredients using a juicer, and serve immediately.
If you are Vitamin D deficient… ‘Any green juice will provide you with extra chlorophyll, which is oxygenated sunshine found in all dark green and leafy vegetables. The darker the green, the higher the chlorophyll content.’
Talise Greens Ingredients 1 kale leaf 2 parsley stalks ½ small celery stalk 1 dash lemon juice (about 1 shot) 3 slices cucumber with skin 1 Romaine lettuce leaf ½ cup baby spinach ½ teaspoon olive oil 1 pinch sea salt or rock salt 1 teaspoon Sacha Inchi protein powder 250ml still water crushed ice Method Blend all ingredients with water and crushed ice. Serve immediately.
If you are anaemic… ‘Green juices and smoothies, as well as recipes containing beetroot, are the obvious supporters. Try the Ruby Red Power Juice recipe. It features a powerhouse of benefits. Beetroot cleanses the blood and together with spinach, supports the building of red blood cells.’
Ruby Red Power Juice Ingredients ¼ beetroot 1 carrot 1 yellow apple 1 orange ½ cup spinach 1 kale stalk 5 strawberries 1 dash extra virgin olive oil Method Juice all ingredients and serve with a dash of extra virgin olive oil.
