There’s much to like about Jambase. Its dim lighting, neatly spaced tables and sleek design offer a jazz club-like vibe unfound elsewhere in Dubai; it truly lives up to its flaunted ‘supper club’ pretensions. The food is splendid – European dishes made with flair – peppered with a strong seafood selection and service that’s fast, friendly and efficient. Meanwhile the house bands the venue programmes generally rank among the best in the city.
Sadly at weekends there’s an identity crisis in play: all the aforementioned class quickly becomes derailed by the pumping DJ that caters for casual drinkers. While you’re enjoying an intimate dinner, chewing on a not insubstantially priced steak, you’re likely to become overwhelmed by blaring beats and shouldered by passing partygoers. It seems at times the management needs to decide whether it’s going for a mature evening club or another spot on the Madinat nightlife crawl. For now at least, to enjoy Jambase’s real charms, make sure you visit on a quieter weeknight.
Open Tue-Wed, Sat 7pm-2am, Thu-Fri 7pm-3am. Souk Madinat Jumeirah, www.jumeirah.com (04 366 6730).
