Left Bank (Souk Al Bahar)
Nominated for Best Bar Food 24 Comments
When heading out to Left Bank, it really makes a difference which venue you choose to visit. Where the Madinat bar is a noisy, boisterous nightspot with a pre-clubby vibe, the Souk Al Bahar venue is thankfully far more palatable – although it can get packed at weekends. A dark and moody lounge bar, it’s not half as stylish as it wants to be, but the length of the drinks menu alone make it a pleasant place to idle some hours. The food menu, by contrast, is a bit of a minefield. Despite an apparently British theme, it dances all over the globe with varying success. The Asian-fusion dishes pose far more ambition than the kitchen is capable of delivering, and the trademark fish choices don’t live up to their promise. The menu has changed a great deal since last year, and vegetarians draw the short straw. Edamame is the only veggie appetiser and there isn’t a single veggie main course in sight. On our last visit we asked for an alternative and we were told to order sides.
