Alfie's, a modern British vision, created chef Christopher Driver and the Alfred Dunhill brand, offers a strong and well-conceived concept, within a bijou, Mall-based restaurant. Small as it is, Alfie's makes great use of the space, divided between a sophisticated bistro-style dining room in icy tones of blue and grey, a miniscule but classic-looking bar area, and a wonderfully inviting, wood and leather-dressed lounge, with the ambience of a London gentlemen's club. The only issue that muddies these elegantly masculine waters is Alfie's location, since the view, straight onto the Mall corridors outside, is a jarring one. Staff are friendly, obliging and well versed in the menu. It offers a compact and tight list of dishes, combining classic ingredients and typical British dishes, from across the Isles into elevated and elegant representations. While the cooking tends to be very rich, it is well worth sampling delicious creations such as the indulgent plate of smoked haddock and potato hash with poached egg or the peppery haggis with sweet quenelles of swede.
