For all the easy and relaxed cache of a British gastro pub on offer at The Wharf, this venue cuts a dash above and beyond the rest. Outside offers the entirely un-English option of a jetty-like terrace, with cushioned dining chairs – evocative of an Arabian majlis – and moody lighting in the evenings. Inside gives way to a Belgium hops hall meets medieval image of Britain, with a cavernous and crypt-like setting, stone ceilings and wooden barrels dotted about the place. Despite the polarised nature of this setting, the pleasant and ambient nature of each means The Wharf manages to make this diverse decor work. Traditional English staples like shepherd's pie and apple and blackberry crumble feature on the menu, which also veers into ambitious European-inspired recipes. The food isn't life changing, but it is decently prepared and enjoyable none-the-less. Service is neither noteworthy, nor problematic, but since The Wharf is a great spot for a casual evening out, that’s neither here nor there.
