One of Dubai’s longest-standing Mexican eateries, Cactus Cantina continues to offer some of the best diner-style, border-straddling dishes in town. Laughing in the face of Dubai’s chain Tex-Mex contingent and their cheap steak cuts, this Satwa joint offers lean fajitas, steaks and all manner of tortilla-wrapped dishes, avoiding going overboard with the queso. Here, you can expect simple, reasonably-sized portions, and food that tastes like it has been cooked from scratch, rather than making a short trip from freezer to fryer. Service can be on the slow side, but it’s a great excuse to tuck into the exciting range of classic Mexican mixed drinks while you take in the suitably rustic surroundings. For city residents partial to Mexican cuisine, but not so much the mall feel that tends to go hand-in-hand with it, there’s one place that stands out as the go-to for all. Perhaps the new dogs should start borrowing some of the old dog’s tricks.
Open daily noon-midnight. Chelsea Plaza Hotel, Satwa, www.chelseaplazahoteldubai.com (04 398 2274).
