Located high up in Grosvenor House – no prizes for guessing which floor – Kitchen 45 at Embassy boasts views of Dubai Marina so stunning you’d almost forgive them for trading off them entirely. Thankfully, there’s no slouching when it comes to staff or food. The former lurk attentively in the shadows, of which there are many given the place is lit so low you feel like you’re wearing sunglasses. The latter could actually probably do with a little more light, given how good the presentation of it is. If some dishes read better than they taste – don’t call something a braised lamb shoulder and then not have it fall off the bone – others, like the mushroom and truffle risotto and the roasted duck breast, are executed with brilliant simplicity that matches the mood of the place: confident and classy, without showing off. The Embassy is a wonderfully situated restaurant, with a setting to rival any top-class dining experience in Dubai. Unfortunately the menu has changed and the focus is now on French/Mediterranean dining rather than English. The previous chef left around two months ago and the menu has been redesigned.

The food is good, the service is very attentive without being overbearing, and the staff are very friendly. What was slightly disappointing is the change in food style. I do sometimes crave top-class English fare and while we did get our way with the dessert and were given Eton Mess the rest of the dining experience didn't live up to our expectations. Maybe the problem was being opposite Gary Rhodes?
