The local business duo of chef Tom Arnel and restaurateur Serg Lopez have done it again, launching their third café, this time located in Mall of the Emirates. From the outside, it looks like a standard mall coffee shop. But from within there is a definite sense of Tom&Serg character. Rough wooden tables and chairs that look like something out of a school room, industrial concrete and chrome touches, and that familiar kitchen out-front look. On the menu are breakfast specials of acai bowls, “avo” and eggs on toast, as well as dinner plates such as super-healthy-sounding salads and pan-fried salmon. Signatures that really stand out from this list include the Mekong burger, made with an exceptionally juicy chunk of battered and fried chicken thigh, dressed with Vietnamese flavours of fresh vegetable slaw and lots of lime. From Common Grounds, customers are getting a new choice of location, but not exactly a new choice of concept from the foodie duo. Still, it’s a cut above most of the café fare elsewhere in the mall.
