This canteen-style spot could easily blend in with all the other offerings that make up the food court in Mercato Mall, but it’s the speciality sweet treats it serves that set Ka’ak Al Manara apart.
Brought over from the streets of Beirut to a stall in a the Jumeirah shopping centre, the ka’ak is a sweet, baked sesame bread that is a mealtime staple in Lebanon. The bread comes stuffed with a range of fillings appropriate to make up a three-course meal, so we opt for something light to start with, one that’s packed with protein to act as our main course and finish off with a sweet filling for dessert.
Service is swift and our starter ka’ak filled with akawi cheese is delivered with a smile. The warm springy-cheese texture is the perfect way to kick off our meal.
The spicy chicken fajita is crammed with tender morsels of meat lathered in a hot sauce. It’s a sizzling success.
We complete our trio of dishes with a peanut butter and jam ka’ak that is great for the kids (and older customers, too).
The menu also boasts soups of the day and salads, but it’s that baked Lebanese favourite that ensures we make more than one trip to the counter.
The Bottom Line Savoury or sweet, the ka’ak is the one.
