A veteran of the Dubai food scene, Bentoya is a no-frills Japanese restaurant with branches off the Sheikh Zayed Road and Garhoud, the latter being our preferred option. The long, narrow space has a sushi bar on the left as you enter, with a pretty comprehensive library of manga, which we think is a cute, very Japanese touch. Further back you have the kitchen on one side and tables opposite. It’s quite cosy and has a decent atmosphere even when it’s not busy. You’ll never struggle to attract the attention of a staff member, with plenty of waiters and waitresses buzzing around, but not intruding. Food-wise, there’s a daily Dhs50 deal where you’ll get enough maki rolls to feed two most days, and a full fish on others – again, enough to feed two. The rolls, while good, can taste a little like they were prepared first thing (but still, Dhs50 for the lot), so we recommend trying some of the dishes off the main menu. The gyoza are superb while any of the ramen dishes get our vote, too.
