Food critics and fitness fanatics will probably argue over the benefits (real or otherwise) of clean eating until they’re blue in the face. But if there’s one city in the world where gym bunnies gobble up the raw, paleo mantra like no other, it’s Dubai. It’s probably fair to say that whatever the scientific proof behind the clean movement, in a place with worrying levels of obesity and type 2 diabetes, anything that encourages a healthier lifestyle is good news.
Pineapple Express, set right next to Fidelity Fitness gym in Almas Tower, JLT, is already a big hit in its native Melbourne, Australia, and now its menu of açaí bowls and raw “Snickers” bars, as well as fresh juices and smoothies, is winning over the Instagrammers of Dubai, too.
We wanted to love it, but found the café, though pretty, not so different to those you’ll find close to most gyms in Dubai. Yes, the food is fresh and tasty, but it doesn’t really do much different. What does sound unique is the Cocowhip “ice cream” made from coconut water. Sadly, there was none available on our previous two visits.
Pineapple Express is a pleasant and welcome addition, but not much more. The Bottom Line Perfect if you live in the cluster or go to the gym in the same tower.
