Recently we told you about the breakfast burger at new casual eatery Tub of Butter and said it was ace.
In fact, all of the breakfast dishes at this spot, with its brushed concrete walls and sparse industrial-style furnishings, are pretty good.
The Italian coffee is excellent (we tried an iced Americano and a flat white), the healthy drinks seem impressive, the service is friendly and swift, and the food is tasty and just how we order it.
That burger (though, it really isn’t a burger at all, it’s a veal bacon and egg butty) is excellent, with a bit of green and healthy avocado and rocket thrown in to make us feel better. The yolk is runny, the bun is soft and the tomato relish is the perfect mix of tangy and sweet. The scrambled eggs are well seasoned and not overdone.
But, for some reason, we can’t bring ourselves to love Tub of Butter. Maybe it’s that décor – it’s just not very cosy.
Especially when the place is nigh on empty. And when we head to the bathroom, we discover the place is even bigger than we initially thought, with a dining area all but bathed in darkness towards the back of the venue.
Maybe it’s the location. It sits right next to the new Metropolitan Hotel Dubai off Sheikh Zayed Road, just down the road from the stretch that already houses Bystro, jones the grocer, Crumbs Elysée et al, so it has tough competition.
Or maybe it’s because we have the nagging sense that we’ve seen it all before at venues such as Craft Café, Pantry Café and Tom&Serg.
On another visit, later in the week (and in the day) we find a busier dining room and that the wood-fired pizzas are excellent.
Hopefully Tub of Butter will find its own way in the crowded Dubai dining scene, or it could very well get lost in it.
