Since the exciting arrival of the breathtaking aqua theatre show La Perle, a fresh lease of life has fallen upon Al Habtoor City. And nowhere is this so obvious than at City Grill.
In the past, the area has been hard to locate (we’ve frequently ended up at the wrong hotel via taxi) and, once found, the eateries eerily empty.
However, with the new nightly super-show attracting a crowd, we’re thrilled to find The City Grill packed on our visit.
No doubt this is aided by the 20 percent off for theatre-goers, but either way, it’s a pleasant surprise and we enjoy the upbeat vibe and buzz of the steakhouse, which is decked out in classic US style (think dark woods and hanging lamps).
The crowd is a mixed and well-dressed one – and the upmarket tone is reflected in the prices (although not in the flimsy paper napkins).
Whether the dishes justify the prices, depends on what you opt for.
The menu is fairly concise but offers up cuts of meat from Argentina, South Africa and Australia.
We kick off with some seared scallops. It’s not a brilliant start – they’re overcooked and rubbery. Things soon look up though. Steak is what the restaurant is all about, and it does it well. An Argentinian fillet is well-cooked and flavoured, and cost-wise is on a par with others in Dubai.
Those who aren’t red meat fans should try the juicy, tasty jumbo prawns – a real highlight.
Sides are a different matter. At Dhs20 a go, the small dishes of lumpy mash, sweet potato fries and watery spinach all come out tepid.
With a good vibe, trendy décor and mostly good dishes, once a few flaws are ironed out, The City Grill has potential. Let’s just hope it doesn’t rely on La Perle for custom, but develops food to justify a visit on its own merit.
